Eric Hoffman / patterhn ives, llcEric Hoffman, AIA NCARB LEED AP is a Professor of Practice at Washington University in St. Louis and a founding partner of patterhn ives, llc. A leading practitioner and educator, Eric is passionately committed to innovation, realization, mentorship, and the environment. With partners Anna Ives and Tony Patterson, Hoffman founded patterhn ives to promote design excellence and foster a practice dedicated to arts, education, and community.

Current work includes the renovation and expansion of Ellis Hall for the Department of Music at Missouri State University and a private, intergenerational residence with tailored space for music, film and visual arts. Serving as his highest measure of professional success, Eric’s many contributions are further endorsed by lasting relationships with clients, consultants, contracting teams, and students.

Course Desciption

This lecture presents the full range of acoustic design and detailing for the renovation of campus building into a state of the art school of music.

Learning Objectives

  1. Introduce the range of acoustic needs for a school of music
  2. Present the acoustic issues discovered in updating a building not originally intended for music
  3. Provide understanding for use form for designing spaces for music including drastic reforming of existing spaces
  4. Present the materials and methods used for spatial sound reinforcement and clarity, and materials and methods used to provide for sound separation between spaces
